Chinese Summer Flash Cards

Flash cards with useful words for the summer

05·22·2014

Feeling hot, hot, hot: that’s what comes to mind when it’s 37 degrees outside in Beijing and it feels like the Sahara, especially considering the fact that it’s merely May, not even July or August. Whether you live in China or not, you need to know what to say when you are literally dying of heat. So TWOC  made you some flash cards to memorize the easiest and most useful words for the hot season:

hot

Unfortunately 热 this is just describing the temperature. You can’t use this to say, “Oh my god that man is so hot, I must have him” , but it can be used to describe something that is very popular.

sweat

If you want to say that you are sweaty it is best to say 满身大汗 (Mǎn shēn dà hàn) literally whole body covered in sweat. Though the jury is out on why exactly you would feel the urge to tell anyone this…

sunglasses

flippers

sunbathe

sunburn

sunscreen2

heatstroke

hotashell

In this particular context “hot as hell” is not a literal translation, it’s an expression that means “Oh My God its so hot I’m gonna die!”, again not that you will literally die.

bikini

bikiniwax

Sadly,  not many Chinese know what this means, so I have gone for the literal translation : removing hair with hot wax. Ouch! Now, go on, see if you can write the characters…

And some summery pick up lines, you know, just in case…:
