Top 5 Chinese Models of 2014

Who are the prettiest faces in all the land?

China’s demand for high fashion is undeniable. So it’s no surprise that demand for Chinese models is skyrocketing. This new generation of Mainland models are making household names for themselves the world over, from London to Paris, Milan through to New York via Shanghai.

Chinese models are making the top-tier bookings: racking up major catwalk appearances, coveted covers and landmark campaigns. 2014 even marked the first time ever that an Asian model made Forbes’ annual top 10 list of Highest Paid Models. Which is a big breakthrough in an industry that is pretty limiting when it comes to diversity: from “yellow-face” jewelry lines, to British Vogue being unable to correctly tell two Chinese models apart, the fashion industry still has a long, long way to go when it comes to equal race representation.

But who have been the top five beautiful Chinese models this year leaving their mark on the fashion industry?

5. Xiao Wen Ju (IMG)

Born on May 19, 1992 in the city of Xi’an in Shaanxi Province, Ju Xiaowen, more commonly known abroad as Xiao Wen Ju,  began modelling in 2010.  Since her international debut in 2011, she  has walked major catwalks all over the world for labels including: Hermès, Louis Vuitton, Prada, Rochas and Thierry Mugler. She was also the first Chinese model to front a Marc Jacobs campaign in 2012. And already this year Xiao has been on the cover of Vogue China twice!

4. Sui He (New York Model Management)

Born on September 23, 1989 in Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province, Sui He is the first Asian model to open a Ralph Lauren runway show and the second Chinese model (after Lui Wen) to walk in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. Sui He was also the judge for China’s Next Top Model, in 2013. A couture runway veteran Sui has walked for Chanel, Dior, and Jean-Paul Gaultier as well as a series of high profile editorial appearances. Sui’s star just keeps on rising.

3. Fei Fei Sun (Women Management)

Born on March 20, 1989 in Weifang, Shandong Province, Fei Fei Sun started her modeling career in 2008 when she represented China in Elite Model Look, one of the world’s most influential modeling contests. Known for breaking cover boundaries, in January 2013 Fei Fei became the first model of Asian descent to grace a solo Vogue Italia cover, and in 2014 she also made history when she was featured alongside eight other models on the cover of the September issue of American Vogue- becoming the first Asian model to ever be on one of their covers. She also has several major campaigns under her belt for brand such as Dior and H&M.

2. Ming Xi (Elite)

Born in 1990, in Shanghai, 24 year old Ming Xi has been making a serious name for herself in the fashion world. Ming Xi was discovered at the Elite Model Look contest like Fei Fei Sun. Very quickly, Ming Xi became one of the most in-demand Asian top models with the house of Givenchy requesting her exclusivity for its haute-couture and ready-to-wear shows in 2010. With spreads in prestigious magazines such as American Vogue , V Magazine, I-D Magazine, Love Magazine & W Magazine and campaigns for Diane Von Furstenberg and department store Barney’s, there is nowhere but up for this young supermodel.

 1. Liu Wen (Elite)
And our number one spot? who else but Liu Wen.
American Vogue recently said that Liu Wen has, “by far, the biggest social-media audience of any model.” Pretty impressive, but what is even more outstanding  is the fact the Liu  has become the first Asian model to ever make Forbes magazine’s annual highest-paid models list beating the likes of Brit Cara Delevingne and Brazilian Alessandra Ambrosio.
Liu is even the first Asian face of cosmetic super-brand  Estée Lauder- which is one of the most desired and lucrative contracts in the industry.
Born in 1988, in Yongzhou, Hunan Province, Lui Wen has gone on to have unparalleled success in her field, with The New York Times naming her, “China’s first bona fide supermodel”. There is no stopping her, as of August 2013, Liu has been ranked #3 on the Top 50 Models Women List by Models.com and is the highest-ranked model of Asian descent in history.
Liu Wen really is China’s greatest ever model.
