Invitations Gone Wrong

Anyone who has been living in China for a little while knows that it’s common for foreigners to get invited along to stuff. Whether it’s a fancy dinner, karaoke fun, or a private party, if you’re on the scene when people are talking about it, you’re sure to be invited along. But how can you tell when people really want you to go, and when they’re just being polite? That’s the subject of an article (“Invitations Gone Wrong”) in Issue 2, 2011 of The World of Chinese magazine, and now it’s also the subject of our second original video!

Check out the video below, on Vimeo for international viewers and Tudou for domestic ones. We’ve also got Youtube, and a Youku link upcoming as soon as it finishes encoding!

If you’re wondering who is behind this (or how our production quality improved so dramatically from the last video) look no further than Jim Fields (Vimeo, Twitter) and Gabe Clermont (Vimeo, Twitter), who helped us with everything from the script to the casting to the camerawork. And stay tuned to the blog because tomorrow we’ll be bringing you a behind-the-scenes look at the making of this video!

Until then, share the video with your friends and buy the magazine! If buying online’s not your thing, you can buy copies in China for 19 RMB at the following locations:

Beijing: Jenny Lou’s, Jenny’s, April Gourmet, Beijing Friendship Supermarket, BLCU Bookstore, the Bookworm, Foreign Language Bookstore, Hutong School, Foreign Language Bookstore (Lufthansa Center), Friendship Store, Hanfenlou Bookstore, International Bookstore in International Culture Building, Jisi-HuiYuan Bookstore, Lion Mart, and the Peking University Bookstore.

I don’t think young Chinese do that any more – inviting 3 times. We take the first refusal. The Chinese guy in the video was acting like a jerk. If it is a date, the couple won’t invite a third person. What kind of idiot would join in other’s date anyway?
