Now here’s a concept Wonka missed: DIY chocolate bars, the newest place to commit carbocide in China. Unlike your local pub’s usual pint-sluggers, patrons at these tiny Shanghai taverns complement cocktails with their own handmade chocolates, making truffles, molding white chocolate masterpieces, or just sampling, sampling, sampling. Apparently the art is easy enough for any tippling tout (although a true chocolate shifu should really get their fingers sticky), and at Chocodo (www.chocodo.com) you can start with hundreds of different chocolates from all over the world. Other quirky Shanghai bar concepts are “chew bars,” where patrons drink and chew gum, and “cry bars,” where you literally go to cry. Now I wonder what my Irish uncle would have to say about that…
