蜜瓜酥(mìguā sū—honeydew melon shortbread cake)

1.80 RMB per cake

These puppies smell like a bag full of strawberry licorice. The filling is sticky and chewy like dried watermelon, which does exist, by the way. It seems I’m not a fan of honeydew in its natural or jellied form. I would rather use the cake as a sachet for my sock drawer than eat it. Either that or eat the shortbread, then play with the sticky contents like Play-Do.

Overall rating: Thanks, but no thanks.

Random Factoid: Honeydew is also known as “Temptation Melons.” Tempting to whom, I don’t know.

江米条(jiāngmǐtiáo—glutinous rice piece)

0.20 RMB per piece

Who invented this “treat” and why does it still exist? It tastes like a stale sugar cube and requires extra toothy vigor to chomp through. These fried curds would be better used as objects for a slingshot rather than for ingesting. This purchase was a pure disappointment.

Overall rating: Thanks, but no thanks.

山楂锅盔
(shānzhā guōkuī—hawthorn pancake)

1.20 RMB per cake

The more I ate this “pancake,” the more I enjoyed it. The slightly sour taste of the hawthorn jelly filling is reminiscent of green apples; hence, this snack is kind of like apple pie. I wonder… How would it taste if I warmed the cake up in the microwave and topped it with some ice cream? And a dash of cinnamon? Maybe next time…

Overall rating: Meh, it’s all right.

椰丝黄油酥(yē sī huángyóu sū—coconut flake and butter shortbread)

0.60 RMB per cookie

I’m not entirely sure what the reddish jelly swirl on top is and it doesn’t contribute much to the flavor of this cookie… I definitely detect coconut, as promised by the name. For the most part, however, this just tastes like Daoxiangcun’s favorite—shortbread. It’s not bad. It’s not real noteworthy, either.

Overall rating: Meh, it’s all right.

松仁枣糕(sōngrén zǎogāo—pine nut date cake)

2.5 RMB per hunk

I think I was hoping for my mom’s chocolate chip date cake, which of course this wasn’t. The cake could have been moister. However, I do appreciate the real fruit chunks interspersed within the loaf and the sprinkle of pine nuts on top. When my stomach burns again from too much coffee, I might buy this cake again…

Overall rating: Meh, it’s all right.
