Measure words. When learning Mandarin, most foreigners tend to push this unfamiliar concept into a deep, faraway hole so that they never have to deal with it when talking the hua (话).  Like a dark shadow, most ignore the existence of measure words, sticking to the simple 个 (ge) when referring to nouns. Unfortunately, native speakers have a hard time understanding the exact meaning of what you are referring to unless the correct measure word is used.

Using the right one works like magic, shining light on the exact meaning of your phrase, whereas using the incorrect one can change the meaning of your sentence entirely. They can become the difference in saying “a pack of books” (一包书 , yi bao shu) and “one book” (一本书, yi ben shu).  Use the right one and you become one step closer to speaking like a native. So how do we tackle this dark shadow? The Picture Dictionary of Chinese Measure Words has come to our rescue!

chinese-measure-words1Packed with 210 frequently used measure words, including nominal measure words, verbal measure words, and concurrent measure words, the Picture Dictionary of Chinese Measure Words helps learners systematically and conceptually study these words. It enables them to accurately communicate and appropriately employ the words.

Frequent meanings and modes of employment, English translations, and usage examples accompanied with translations are listed with each word, with most examples having colorful illustrations.

There are 908 associated nouns listed, 1481 noun groupings, 108 verb groupings, and 11 other groupings. Counter units of time, units of currency, and units of measurement are listed in aggregate appendices at the back of the book.

So what makes this picture dictionary different than others? There are three main differences that set the Picture Dictionary of Chinese Measure Words apart.

  1. Illustrations: In order to augment descriptions with pictures that illustrate the iconographic concept of measurement, lively, vivid pictures and drawings are employed to help the learner better comprehend the concepts .
  2. Integration with standardized tests: Because most of the measure words, nouns, and verbs employed in this dictionary are key words for the HSK and the YCT examinations, it allows users to solidify their vocabularies and prepare for the tests.
  3. Multiple look up methods:  One can directly look up a measure word and the nouns or verbs frequently associated with it at the start of the book. After the main entries there is both an English and Chinese index of nouns, allowing the user to look up a specific noun and the measure words that are frequently associated with it. The English version allows for one to look up the English words that relate to the corresponding vocabulary items.chinese-measure-words
