If you’ve lived in China you are no doubt familiar with the annoying, or perhaps cute, “plaza dancing” 广场舞 that occurs on any piece of public space large enough for middle aged ladies to put on a show. And there is obviously nothing harmful in older people getting exercise and having fun, but the volume is enough to drive some people mad. And that is exactly what it did to a resident in Beijing’s Changping District. He got so fed up with the music that he fired off his shotgun and released his 3 Tibetan mastiffs into the dancing crowd.
China Youth reports that man, surnamed Shi, was taken to court for illegally possessing a hunting gun. According to Shi, he likes quiet and has trouble sleeping. In order to live in a quiet place, he moved out of his residence by the 5th Ring Road and sought refuge in a little courtyard in Changping.
However, his plan was sabotaged by these square-dancers, who blast out music every morning and evening in the small plaza by his yard. “The bass in the music they play is very noisy, it makes my head hurt, and I cannot sleep at all,” Shi explained.
He tried to talk to the dancing dama about the volume, but his complaints were ignored. Having had a little too much to drink, Shi heard once again the music pounding in the plaza, so he did what any respectable crazy, gun totin’ vigilante would do: took out his double-barreled shotgun, fired it into the air, and released his three pet Tibetan mastiffs to dispel the dancing old ladies. Nice.
Shi’s radical method seems to have worked and the dancing has indeed stopped. Some residents sympathize with Shi, with one saying: “I have had to bear with it for very long… The government should regulate it, get a designated place for them to dance and forbid them to dance on other public spaces!”
Noise pollution resentment towards grannies dancing in the square is a national issue. Not long ago, a group of these dancing old ladies had poop thrown at them. In April, a resident in Chengdu threw “water bombs” at the dancing troupe downstairs.
Netizen 快乐的微子2010 also suffers from these dancers: “Very against plaza dancing, it’s so loud my child cannot even do his homework. Every night at seven, the music comes on so loudly. Old people nowadays really take advantage of their age, they are energetic when dancing and hiking, but cannot stand on public transportation. Sometimes I really do not want to give them my seats!”
