Tai Chi, Hun Yuan, and the Xiao Yao Handkerchief - a step by step guide to three basic Taoist hairstyles

From Taoist philosophers such as Laozi (Lao Tzu) and Zhuangzi, to Taoist gods and immortals such as the Eight Immortals, well-known Taoist figures have always been surrounded by mysteries and legends. If you ever consider joining a monastery, become a follower (Taoists are allowed to marry and have children), or dress up as someone from martial arts novels and kung fu films, why not start by learning how to do a Taoist hairstyle?

White Cloud Temple, one of the most renowned Taoist monasteries in China, shared their guide to doing three basic hairstyles.

A: the Tai Chi Bun (太极髻)

Step 1. Regardless of the length of your hair, tie a ponytail first

Step 2. Tie up the ponytail (seen from the side)

Step 3. Insert a hairpin into the bun

Step 5. Grab one strand, start in front of the hair pin, coil it from right to left around the pin, and tuck the end into the bottom of the bun

Step 6. In the same way, coil the other strand from right to left.

Step 7. Tuck in the ends naturally

Step 8. And you are done!

B: The Hun Yuan Bun (混元髻)

Step 1 and 2: tie up a ponytail as mentioned in the previous style.

Step 3. Hold your right hand so that your palm faces backwards and stretch out your fingers, grab your hair with your left hand and place it in the palm of your right hand.

Step 4. Coil your hair from the palm to the back of your hand, continue to coil it until you’ve got it all

Step 5. Slide the four fingers of your left hand down the back of your right hand down to the bottom of the bun

Step 6. Stick a hairpin into the bun, diagonally deep into the bottom of the ponytail, and lift it up a little on the left to reveal the other end of the hairpin

Step 7. Done.

C: Using the Taoist handkerchief (逍遥巾)

Step 1. Start with the Tai Chi Bun or Hun Yuan Bun.

Step 2. Hold the top two corners with each hand and place it around the bottom of the bun.

Step 3. Use the two corners to tie it in the back

Step 4 and 5. Tie a slip knot, followed by another one.

Step 6. Flip the handkerchief over the bun.

Step 7 and 8. Get rid of the wrinkles.

Step 9 and 10. Get out the tie, and tie it around the bun.

Step 11 and 12. Continue tying it around, and tie it off.

Step 13 and 14. Tie the knot and fix the look.
