While The Big Bang Theory is generally known as the best comedy TV series in the west, the Chinese prefer watching 2 Broke Girls instead (mainly because the first one is blocked). A funny show with sometimes racially offensive jokes tells the story of two Brooklyn waitresses trying to get rich. They work in a diner owned by a Korean-American, Han Lee. Even though Han is constantly mocked by Max, he is still very popular among Chinese netizens.
While most of the 2 Broke Girls audience are waiting for the day when Han Lee comes out as gay, the actor portraying Han came out as Chinese. Matthew Moy recently visited Beijing and during an interview revealed that his ethnicity is not Korean, but Chinese. Xinhua reported that this was the first time Moy had ever admitted that he is of Chinese ethnicity, even though it is written on his Wikipedia page. Because of the popularity of his Korean character, Han Lee, and his Korean accent, people just automatically assume that he is Korean. In fact, Moy is a US citizen by birth, and he belongs to the Hakka minority. He can not speak Mandarin, but is fluent in Cantonese.
“I am Chinese, I am not Korean, but I like to eat a lot of Korean BBQ” said the actor when he appeared as a guest on Youku’s very own Kelly Show.
I guess now we can add him to the list of Celebs you didn’t know were Chinese.
