The World of Chinese is seeking a full-time native English-speaking editor and an English-fluent Chinese editor and writer. All positions are based at our Beijing office unless otherwise noted.

 

Native English-speaking Editor 

The ideal candidate will have a solid knowledge and interest in China, and the ability to work to house style and requirements.

Requirements include:

  • An understanding of modern feature-writing conventions
  • The ability to edit and write quality, long-form stories, as well as shorter articles and blogs, under deadline
  • An ability to think creatively and work collaboratively with others
  • Familiarity with current affairs and cultural tropes
  • Previous journalism experience preferred
  • Social media and photography experience are bonuses

Duties include:

  • Pitching and writing stories for our bi-monthly print publication, as well as for the website
  • Producing original content
  • Taking responsibility for the editorial quality of the magazine as a whole
  • Editing stories for grammar, consistency, and accuracy
  • Working with management to perfect editing and writing styles
  • Sticking to a strict publication schedule, while dealing with editorial concerns as they arise

 


 

English-fluent Chinese editor and Writer

The ideal candidate will have a strong interest and knowledge of Chinese news, society, and culture and should be familiar with a range of topics, from travel to history. Candidates must have strong research abilities, good interview skills, and excellent storytelling abilities, along with the willingness to seek out and pitch ideas.

Requirements include:

  • A high degree of English-language proficiency
  • An understanding of modern reporting and feature-writing conventions
  • The ability to meet regular deadlines for quality, long-form stories
  • An ability to think creatively and work collaboratively with others
  • Competency with current affairs and cultural tropes, and familiarity with both Chinese and overseas media
  • A good eye for editing, design, structure, and Chinese language
  • Experience with social media is required and established social media presence (Weibo, Twitter) is helpful
  • Photography skills and previous journalism experience are helpful

Duties include:

  • Pitching and writing stories for the bi-monthly print publication, as well as the website
  • Travel and field reporting
  • Producing original content on a regular basis
  • Editors are expected to take collective responsibility for the quality of the magazine as a whole
  • Assisting with edits of all print stories for grammar, consistency, and accuracy
  • Working with management to perfect your writing and reporting style
  • Sticking to a strict publications schedule and dealing with editorial concerns as they arise
