The ideal candidate will have a strong interest and knowledge of Chinese news, society, and culture, and should be familiar with a range of China-related topics, from travel to history. Candidates must have strong research abilities, good interview skills, and excellent storytelling abilities, along with the willingness to seek out and pitch ideas.
Responsibilities
- Pitching and writing stories for the bi-monthly print publication, as well as the website
- Traveling and field reporting
- Producing original content on a regular basis
- Taking collective responsibility for the quality of the magazine as a whole
- Assisting with editing of all TWOC stories for grammar, consistency, and accuracy
- Working with management to perfect your writing and reporting style
- Sticking to a strict publications schedule and dealing with editorial concerns as they arise
Requirements
- Native Chinese speaker with a high degree of English-language proficiency
- An understanding of modern reporting and feature-writing conventions
- Ability to meet regular deadlines for quality, long-form stories
- Ability to think creatively and work collaboratively with others
- Competency with current affairs and cultural tropes, and familiarity with both Chinese and overseas media
- A good eye for editing in terms of style, structure, design, and Chinese language
- Experience with social media is required and an established social media presence (Weibo, Twitter, etc.) would helpful
- Photography skills and previous journalism experience are helpful
