Now that Beijing is finally warm enough that the mere thought of saddling up doesn’t send a chill down one’s spine, it’s time again to struggle into the spandex in anticipation of the 3rd Annual “Bohai or Bust” charity bike ride.
Hosted by the Schoolhouse at Mutianyu, this Saturday, April 14, cycling teams will set off on three scenic routes of 11, 32 and 76 kilometers in Bohai Township, followed by lunch, live music, lucky draws and more at the Roadhouse.
The World of Chinese’s own David Green and Victor Huelamo will be tackling the 32 kilometer circuit and distributing the latest issue of the magazine on Saturday, so make sure to grab a copy and say hello!
Registration and a ride to and from Beijing, including transport for your own bike, is RMB230 for adults and RMB180 for children under 13 years old. It’s RMB200 for adults and RMB150 for children if you ride the Bohai or Bust bus and pay to rent a bike rental separately through Bicycle Kingdom (make sure to make arrangements in advance). If you opt to drive yourself and your bike to Mutianyu, then registration is RMB160 for adults and RMB110 for children.
Register in advance and check the maps at www.bohaiorbust.org to choose the route that best suits you. Fees will be collected the day of the ride, and proceeds from the event will be given to the elderly of Bohai Township on Elder’s Day (Chong Yang Jie 重阳节) in October, in recognition of their contributions to the community’s development. Last year’s ride saw over 200 participants and earned RMB21,190 for the local elderly.
Lunch is included in the registration fee, but remember to bring extra water and snacks for the ride, as well as cash (exact change is appreciated), sunglasses, sunscreen, a spare tire and any tools you may need to fix your bike. A helmet and a charged mobile phone are mandatory accessories!
In the afternoon, an auction and raffle give participants a shot at a fine range of prizes, including a Trek 3500 MTB bike, a tasting menu voucher for four at Temple Restaurant Beijing valued at RMB5,000, class passes to the Yoga Yard and cooking classes at the Hutong, among many others.
