For the past 15 years, The World of Chinese has dedicated itself to becoming a leading resource for in-depth reporting and quality writing on China. In order to continue telling great stories, we are moving toward a paid subscription model for our online content.

Don’t panic! There will still be tons of free articles available, while our subscribers will have premium access to our award-winning features, short documentaries, and some exclusive podcasts. The soft paywall will be gradually rolled out as of May 1, 2022. You will need to create an account on our website to access our free articles. If you like them, you have the option to become a paid premium reader and get full access to our new content as well as our archives. All registered users will also be subscribed to our monthly newsletter to see our editors’ picks of top articles and new happenings from TWOC and our partner organizations.

Your personal information will not be shared with any third parties, and you can unsubscribe and remove your email from our database at anytime. We hope, though, that you’ll choose to become part of our family of dedicated subscribers and be part of our mission to present China from a different angle.

Sincerely,

The World of Chinese

FAQs

Why are you now charging me money for the same stories?

We are the last print magazine in China focusing on original feature-writing and photography in English, and we tell quality stories in a challenging and competitive media environment. Our writers and editors aren’t seeking riches, but we do need your support to continue serving our readers and finding new, innovative ways of telling stories from China.

What do I get with a paid digital subscription?

After you’re registered with an email address, you will get access to an unlimited amount of regular articles on our website, for free. If you decide to become a premium reader and pay for a monthly or annual subscription, you will get access to exclusive articles available in our printed magazine, featuring on-the-ground reporting, in-depth analysis, and award-winning photography. You will also get access to select podcasts as well as short documentaries that bring our captivating storytelling to a different medium.

What does The World of Chinese do with my data once I subscribe?

We simply keep the information as a record to allow you access to our online platform. We won’t share your data with any third party and you are free to request to be removed from our database any time. You will notice that we keep only very basic information, and we entrust your shipping information to established payment systems such as PayPal, if you are ordering a print version of our magazine.

Which payment methods do you accept?

We currently accept payment via Paypal and credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, JCB, Diners Club, and EnRoute). We also accept WeChat Pay and Alipay via the Youzan platform.

Will my digital subscription auto-renew?

If you paid using Paypal or credit cards, your digital subscription will auto-renew upon expiry. If you pay via WeChat Pay and Alipay, you currently have to renew your subscription manually when it expires.

How to cancel auto-renewal?

If you paid using Paypal or Credit card, you can go to your Subscription settings and switch to the “Basic” plan. Your subscription will still be active but will not auto-renew upon expiry. If you pay via WeChat Pay and Alipay, your subscription will not auto-renew.

Do I have to pay again if I already have a subscription to the print magazine?

Your print magazine subscription comes with free access to all of our digital content, including subscriber-exclusive content on our website. To activate your digital subscription, just send an e-mail to subscriptions@theworldofchinese.com indicating the full name, shipping address, and phone number associated with your print magazine subscription with the subject line “Activate digital subscription.”

Help! I'm having problems with my digital subscription!

Send an e-mail to support@theworldofchinese.com. We encourage you to attach a screenshot describing your issues so our support team can better assist you.

What is the refund policy for your digital subscription?

Each of our subscribers plays a part in supporting the writers, editors, and designers of our small magazine. We cannot offer refunds after you’ve activated your digital subscription (though you may cancel the auto-renewal), so sit back and enjoy your exclusive access to our award-winning stories while your subscription lasts!
