The rise of otome games—plot-based dating simulation games targeted primarily at women—has proven highly lucrative for the Chinese gaming market. We had the opportunity to speak with Dr. Felania Mengfei Liu, a renowned game scholar at Beijing Normal University and the curator of the Homo Ludens Archive, China’s first and only game archive center, about the evolving gender perceptions within the Chinese gaming community.
