The World of Chinese Movie Night comes back to Modernista this Tuesday with Shennu (神女), which literally means “goddess,” but is slang for “prostitute.” This 1934 drama tells the story of a young mother who is forced to sell herself at night on the streets of Shanghai as a means of supporting herself and her infant son. Trouble hits when a gambler called “the Boss” tries to bully his way into being her pimp. In an attempt to escape, the young woman flees and begins working a straight job, but she is soon tracked down by the Boss, who drags her back into prostitution. She does, however, manage to stash away enough money to send her son to school, but thanks to his mother’s profession, the boy is ostracized. Everything blows up when the other parents demand the boy be expelled, and the Boss finds her stash of money.
