Hutongs in Transition

In the past few decades, what has changed in the hutongs, and what hasn’t? One “old Beijinger” takes us on a walk through his childhood hutong, a tour of physical changes (new toilets, new courtyard doors) that fail to change what is essential to the hutongs (the close-knit relationship between neighbors, the alley cats). He concludes, “This is still Old Beijing.”
