While “shuangxiu,” or two-day weekends, was introduced in the 1990s, China’s high-pressure work culture has led many companies to ignore the policy. In 2025, Chinese enterprise employees worked an average of 48.6 hours per week, more than four hours above the 44-hour legal limit.
Many two-session delegates have, for years, made the enforcement of two-day weekends a central proposal. Now, consumers are joining the push for businesses to rethink how they treat employees through a new shopping trend, voting with their wallets by supporting companies that honor two-day weekends.
